The engineering of an articulating jib crane makes it able to position loads of material into places that cannot be reached with any traditional jib cranes. Like the freestanding articulating jib crane, the ceiling mounted jib crane can allow capacities of up to 2000 lbs., cover a circular span of up to 16 feet and be aided with the same hook mounted lifting devices, that the freestanding articulating crane is able to use. The fact that it can be mounted to a platform, will allow it support from a bridge crane to give it the ability to oscillate beyond its conventional coverage area or space.

Wall Mounted Jib Cranes

Wall mounted articulating cranes are generally required for jobs that require maneuvering around or under obstructions, especially with the proper wall or column support to this crane type. While wall mounted cranes are not able to rotate 360 degrees, the best they can rotate is up to 200 degrees.

Despite its lower rotation ability, it can still allow for capacities up to 2000 lbs. and cover circular spans of up to 16 feet, just like the freestanding and ceiling mounted articulating cranes. The wall mounted crane provides a clear work area free of any obstructions on the floor. Also, the ceiling crane will require minimal overhead clearance to be installed. Each of these crane types has great capacity capabilities and less restrictive load space than many other models and types of cranes. The fact that articulating cranes can easily load and unload materials are what gives it a strategic advantage based on the crane’s intended use.

Information Regarding Over the Bridge Crane

An over the bridge crane (OTBC) runs on a runway system that is elevated and tends to follow the span of the building. It has a hook motion of three axises along the length of a factory and provides three axes of hook motion (X, Y, and Z). The trolley of the OTBC is responsible for moving the item to either side. The hoist, the second part of the over the bridge crane, handles up and down movements.  There are two types of over the bridge crane: the single girder and the double girder. There are differences between the two, but they are both elements that allow precise and exacting positioning of the hook, and also control the placement of the load. Without them, it would drop heavily and potentially get damaged.

There are differences between the two. There is often confusion about the durability of the double girder crane. The perception is that it is sturdier. The fact is (and this is verified by the CMAA (Crane Manufacturers Association of America), both double and single girder cranes are strong and durable. However, the single girder has powerful cross girders which the double girder does not have, and it also comes equipped with lateral bracing. This actually makes the single girder the stronger of the two.

Types of Over the Bridge Crane

The main difference between double and single girder cranes is their hook (which controls the height that your load can be lifted. This is the area that double girder cranes dominate. They have a lift height that is 18-36 inches higher than the single girder. The reason their lift is so much more effective is because they have a hoist which is added between the cross girders, whereas on the single girder crane the cross girders are underneath.

There are also Electric Overhead Cranes (EOT). These cranes, simply put, are exactly like non-electric cranes but are run by electronic devices. They are often built specifically for the customer, based on industry and location-based needs. Since each industry has its own set of requirements, they require different technologies. Some industries include: construction companies who have to move materials, production halls, assembly lines, storage areas, and even power stations use overhead cranes and hoists.

Duty Cycle | What is It?

Companies must first decide their lifting needs when it comes to design, specifically the capacity required. Then they need to determine the “duty cycle” they’ll be using for the hoist. This is based on the lifts per hour, and the length of each lift.

There are also rotary overhead cranes, which has an end of the bridge that is on a pivot that is fixed, and the other end is carried on an annular track. The circular area underneath is where the bridge travels. This kind of crane allows for longer reach and also removes strain on building walls, as compared to, say, the jib crane.

The Four Basic Designs of Overhead Cranes

Overhead cranes, otherwise known as bridge cranes is a type of crane that is used mainly in an industrial atmosphere. Overhead cranes do the strenuous tasks of removing extremely heavy and massive loads of materials through the overhead of a facility. Overhead cranes will never material handle at ground level, hence the name overhead. Overhead cranes generally lift, lower and move loads of materials horizontally. Parts of the overhead crane design include the truck, end ties, girders, a walkway and a drive mechanism, which carries the trolley and travels parallel to the bridge.

There are four basic types of overhead crane design which are: the top running crane, under running crane, single girder bridge crane, and the double girder bridge crane. Although they vary in design, they still do the same function, which is to move heavy loads of materials overhead. With a varied design look, the top running crane is mainly engineered to travel on rails, which are mounted on runway beams. These beams can be supported by freestanding columns or the existing columns of a building. The under running crane was designed to travel at the bottom flange of a runway beam. The roof’s structure of the building will more than likely support the runway beam for the under running crane. Single girder bridge cranes are simply made up of one girder, double end trucks and a trolley hoist. The trolley hoist runs along the bottom flange of the girder between the double end trucks.

Factors of an Overhead Crane Design

Double girder bridge cranes, which is a type of overhead crane design will allow the trolley hoist to travel on top of the rails that are mounted. Single girder bridge and double girder bridge cranes can be referred to as gantry cranes. However, gantry cranes will differ in the fact that they are actually attached to legs at both sides of the span. Gantry crane engineering will generally eliminate the required use of a column or an overhead runway system, which is a monorail system. Dealing with the fact that the system is monorail a trolley hoist assembly will be needed.

The use of monorails is determined by the service areas or even in applications where the loads being lifted, lowered and moved must follow an established path. Certainly, during the process, the trolley hoist would be mounted to the bottom flange of the monorail’s beam, just as it would in a single girder crane.

When working with any design of overhead cranes, it is very important to know the crane and the varied functions of the crane. Basic things like knowing about the products nickname, how and why it functions the way it does is proven crucial to maintaining and running an overhead crane. Also, it is crucial to get the most comprehensive training in order to properly service the whichever overhead crane machine type that will be used. Since overhead cranes are used for industrial uses and housed in factories, this means that if there is any chance or possibility that the machine might malfunction or cease to work, the factory may risk taking a loss financially.  It is imperative that the person operating the machine knows how to work the machine and there are thousands of programs that will help with teaching how to use overhead cranes. The different types of overhead cranes will do the same function or functions of lifting, lowering and moving heavy and massive loads of materials. Although, they perform the same function the overhead crane design will vary due to some tasks they can handle compared to another model design.

This feature is appreciated and of value for work environments that require extra overhead clearance because of obstructions below the mast.

Custom-Built Jib Crane Has Great Options

Wall mounted – Wall mounted jib cranes have a circular coverage area of 180-degree rotation. They are not as heavy as floor ones but they are still strong with capacities of up to 5 tons. They are a great solution if the workspace is an issue. The are made to be able to easily fold up out of the way. They require no floor space and do not have a foundation.

The two main types of wall mounted jib cranes are cantilever and ones that are rod supported. In regards to savings, tie rod ones are economical. These do not have a support structure under the boon. This makes it easy for the operator to navigate the trolley hoist to travel the full length of the boom. This system is reinforced with a wall bracket with the tie rod supported boom.

Wall mounted systems are a great solution for work environments that are very busy. The benefits of them are they allow for easy installation for individual work areas. However, of the types, they are not the best for precision or for flexibility in lifting.

Articulating Jib Cranes Articulating has a variety of installation types. They also offer a great range of motion and lifting flexibility. This type of crane is unique in that it offers two types of rotation. The inner arm gives 200 degrees of rotation and the outer arm provides 360 degrees of rotation. The versatility of the handling allows operators to lift and move items around corners and columns. The operator can move it and place between the anchor and the reach of the boom. These types offer multiple installations options such as floor mounting, wall mounting, ceiling mounting and bridge mounting. Their inner and outer arms allow and operator to navigate around most obstructions. Their flexibility and variety make a great solution for most work environments.

The Amazing Overhead Free Standing Crane

The overhead free standing crane is also well known as an overhead bridge crane, or a workstation bridge crane. There are three different popular types of overhead bridge cranes. The three types are:

  • Single Girder Top Running Bridge Crane – This type is an overhead bridge crane that has one bridge girder that supports the trolley and hoist. The trolley and the hoist ride along the bottom flange of the bridge. The single girder crane is also widely considered top running when the girder of the bridge runs along the top of the runway beams instead of the bottom.
  • Double Girder Top Running Bridge Crane – This model is an overhead bridge crane that has two bridge girders that support the trolley and hoist. The trolley and hoist ride on top of the two bridge girders. The double girder bridge crane is considered top running when the bridge girders ride on top of the runway beams.
  • Single Girder Under Running Bridge Crane – This variation is a bridge crane in which the girder of the bridge runs along the bottom of the runway beam. In contrast to a top running bridge crane where the bridge girder rides on top of the runway beams. The runway beam for an under running bridge crane is which this type is usually ceiling mounted. The under running bridge cranes also have a weight limit of only 10 tons which is highly advised not to be exceeded.

The other choice for an overhead free standing crane is the workstation bridge crane. This type of crane has two types of choices consisting of:

  • Free Standing Workstation Bridge Crane – This choice utilizes an enclosed track design that makes for easy movement and longevity of life. Enclosed track systems are high in strength and low in weight. The low profile enclosed track design allows for the system to be installed where headroom is a problem.
  • Ceiling Mount Workstation Bridge Crane – Work Station Bridge Cranes use enclosed track that is cold rolled and has a low profile that offers a low-weight to high-strength ratio. Floating end trucks result in ease of movement and precise load positioning. The bridge travels smoothly down the enclosed track runway. Ceiling mount workstation bridge cranes come with standard hanger assemblies.

Although there are those five standards and most popular types of the overhead free standing crane, there are many other variations and types to choose from when considering purchasing. The few things to consider about them and to be cautious of are similar across all various models of cranes. The factors to be considered consist of weight lifting limit for the hoisting capacity, operating space, worker safety, and ease of worker operability. Always be sure to consider all cautious specifications before purchasing a crane and also be sure to never operate a crane outside of its operating capacity. Meaning never lifts more than the crane has been designed to lift by the manufacturer, and always ensure that the operator knows all safety risks of the crane in operation.
